I've lived within 20 miles of my parents all my life and have quilted for the past 30+ years.
This quilt has been kept safely in my Mom's linen closet for 70 years! Can you believe I've never seen it before??
Look at some close ups:
See where the basting was never removed.
Look how vivid the color is on these prints!
This quilt was made by my maternal grandmother. It is hand pieced, appliqued, embroidered and quilted!
The muslin backing shows the tiny hand quilting stitches.
I've finally got to see and enjoyed this wonderful treasure made by the person who inspired my quilting.

That is absolutely amazing Mary! What a treasure!
A truly awesome treasure!
It's stunning, Mary! Definitely an heirloom.
Wow Mary, how amazing! What a treasure.
Gorgeous photo... hope you are doing ok after tonights weather!
I am fighting this with my mom - why hide those treasures away for no one to see, appreciate, or better yet - use. It is truly an heirloom piece that shows a lot of love thru it's hand work. I hope you didn't put it back in the trunk.
Such a shame to hid it away, it's lovely, use it, get some pleasure out of it, it's just too pretty to be kept in the dark.
What a wonderful quilt. I love how the colours have stayed so bright.
What a treasure!!!
Amazing! What a lovely family heirloom!
What a treasure! (Audrey is as well)
Oh wow, what a treasure to find! Gorgeous.
What a wonderful find! My great grandmothers quilted for themselves and for others and it's amazing how many of the quilts have been hiding.....some still to be found! I'm so glad you found one of your family's hidden treasures!
WOW! What a treasure!
I'm amazed you had never seen this one before. Will you inherit this quilt?
It's such a treasure! I found the exact same blocks, not put together, several years ago in a bag of leftovers from my long deceased grandmothers stash. I put them together, hand quilted it and gave it my mom(who doesn't quilt). Someday it will be passed on to a great-granddaughter.
Hmm I would be wanting to keep it and display it in a safe place myself. it is beautiful. No spots from wear or storage. Really an amazing quilt.
That is one beautiful treasure Mary! What an incredible surprise to see! Thanks for sharing your heirloom... just gorgeous!... I love those fabrics.
What a happy, spring-y quilt! I just decided that quilts will not stay in closets anymore at my house. I moved stuff to create a great stacking location for all quilts not on beds or hung. When more finishes make the stack too large, I'll rotate on a monthly basis between the stack, the hanging rods, and the cedar chest.
Wow it's beautiful! What a fantastic find!
What a beautiful treasure! I don't think I could bring my self to use it. I have one my Great Grandmother made for me as a child. I keep it out sometimes to share and look at but never to use. I use the ones I make but the one my GGM made, will be passed down to my oldest.
that is sew amazing! what an awesome day seeing it for the first time. its even more awesome that those "vintage" prints are originals! :) don't see those any more.
Very Awesome!
It's so beautiful Mary...how amazing is it that you never ever saw it..and a little sad that it was put away when it could have been loved and comforted someone.
Well at least you have it to enjoy now.
Julia ♥
What a great quilt! I love the vintage butterfly quilts and this one is "perfect", although it might feel a bit unloved.
I have always loved butterfly quilts and this is truly a heirloom. What a nice quilt to be able to treasure and share.
The quilter was indeed one talented lady. You are so fortunate to have her as your mentor. She is so fortunate to have someone who loves and treasures her beautiful work.
Regards,
Anna
That is a magical thing to have happened, the quilt is truly a treasure. Fancy never knowing about it.
There is a butterfly quilt at my mom's house, too. It's very similar to your quilt. It was made by my Great Aunt Bell and goes to my brother one day. That's okay as I have good pictures of it. :-) Did you know the quilt existed and just hadn't ever seen it?
Oh my how wonderful for you to have such a treasure.
To think such a beauty has been tucked away and not used. It' sure is a treasure to keep and show off.
Oh, I so enjoyed seeing that treasured quilt. Such fun fabrics she used. Thanks for sharing.
what a beauty! it's fun to see the old 30's prints in their true colors rather than faded and worn. i can't believe that this quilt was in hiding for THAT long. amazing!
that is so amazing, what a treasure! so glad you brought it out.
Beautiful!!! What a treasure!
Holy cow! What a treasure! It really is beautiful, Mary.
Thanks Mary for sharing your lovely quilt. I'm making a butterfly quilt with the center of the body in a different color fabric from the wings but it looks as though your butterfly is cut from a single piece of fabric and the center formed by the stitching. Is that correct? Thanks.
