It is only the quilt top, but it is 78" by 102" and all hand pieced Grandmother's Flower Garden! The hexagons are all 3/4" finished measurement on each side. There is no border. The seller indicated fabrics are from the twenties and thirties. Now what do I do with it to make it usable? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My Thrift Store Rescue
So....I never go to thrift stores, but my sister was here from Texas and we spent some time "Up North" at the cabin with another sister. A rainy afternoon and we headed to the nearest small town and the thrift stores. And look what jumped into my hands from a shelf in the back corner of the cramped space!!!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! What a treasure. I would have someone quilt it or if you're a hand quilter that's what I'd do. Good thing it's now in a loving home.
What a beautiful find! Let me know what you do with it. My mother-in-law has several quilts from my husbands great-great-grandmother that are over 100 years old and she's afraid to have them quilted because of how fragile the fabric is. I believe she is going to hand quilt it.
Absolute gorgeous!!! I am slowly working on mine... slowly.
Hugs!
That is stunning!! I would hand quilt it, if I had the time (and endurance...)
oh my goodness, do tell where "UP NORTH" you found that! I'll be back on the 2nd!
LOVE IT!!
As for finishing it? it's a definite hand quilting job for sure. I don't know. I might not touch it, because it's so nice to see the back... it might just be a keeper.
That's beautiful Mary. I'm not sure how far you are from me but Lori the owner of Eagle Creek here in town has a lot of historical quilts and I bet she'd have some ideas for you? Keep us posted on your action plan!
Mary you won the jackpot with that one. I would hand quilt it and enjoy the process all the way!
Oh wow! Beautiful! You will probably have to add some extra hexagons to give it a border, I think.
This may be a good idea: http://www.flickr.com/photos/quiltlady/2352477202/
Wow - what a great find!! I can't wait to see what you do with it. Lucky you!!!
Wow.....that would have excited you totally to find it. How lucky are you and I think I would hand quilt it. Its beautiful!
wow, I wish something like this would fall into my hand.........was it expensive?
What a wonderful find!
This is a TREASURE. Wow... look what great shape these patches are in. You can only hand quilt this yourself.. or have someone else do it. since it is totally hand pieced.. it needs to be hand quilted too. VERY lovely.
I think that it needs to be finished and hand quilted as well. What a treasure!
Oh, Mary! It is stunning and must have been carefully preserved because the colors are so fresh. Quilting it will alter its value if you have any thoughts of selling it. Here's a link to Penny McMorris answering a question about that:

It is so lovely, I think I would be tempted to sandwich it, quilt it and use it where I could show it off!
all the best,
Dana
What an incredible find. It looks like it's in amazing shape. I'd be tempted to finish off the edges with half hexagons, sandwich it and hand quilt it.
The quilt is just stunning! What a find!

What an amazing treasure. I would try and do what the maker intended which as it was hand pieced, to hand quilt it with a backing fabric if not of the same age then one of the repro 1920s 30s that you can buy. I don't think I would have it to use everyday though as it is a little part of textile history and it would be such a shame if the fabrics were faded or ripped by use.
It has to be up to you wether you hand quilt or machine quilt it. As long as it gets to be a finished quilt. It's really lovely. It looks in great condition.
Wow, what a rescue that was. I would hand quilt it if you like to hand quilt. It will take a while but that quilt would be worth it since it was hand pieced too. What a find.
What a great find. It interesting how things turn out when we least expect them.
Hope you have a great day. :o}

Hi Mary,
Love the GFG, if it's not too worn and the fabric isn't falling apart you could have it quilted by machine. I know most of the previous posters said to hand quilt it, but if you're not into that you could always machine quilt it. My good friend is an LA quilter and someone gave her an old quilt to quilt and she did a marvelous job quilting it. The quilt had a wavy or undulated center and would not lay flat. When my friend finished quilting it, it laid flat and turned out just beautiful. So that's just another idea.
I saw a gfg at a quilt show that had a rounded border around it. It was just beautiful.
I've been working on a GFG quilt for about 9 years now, I call it my traveling project and that's why it's not finished. I was planning to hand quilt it, but it might not get finished for another 9 years if I go that route. Enjoy..
HI Mary,
you found a real tresure!
I think you should quilt it and you can use it. You can do handquilting if you think the fabric is too old.
I love the colors!
Happy sewing!
Zlaty
What a treasure. I'd send it to the quilter.
Aaugh! You totally scored!! What a treasure. Can you imagine all the work that went into that??
My gosh .... if something like that came along my way, I'm sure my heart would stop beating! What a beautiful find and hand quilting is the way to go.
Ohhhhhhhh! Oh gosh, what a treasure!!!!! I would buy some coordinating fabric and hand sew it...it is just beautiful! Maybe look online for similar quilts and see how they were finished!
Unbelievable! Wow! This quilt is absolutely stunning. Yes..I agree with the others...I would find a perfect backing and slowly and carefully hand quilt this beautiful vintage find. Savor the moments...there is no hurry to finish it.
What a beautiful find, congratulations!
