Another reason I'm excited is that I pieced the cover quilt: You Are Here! The first time I saw You Are Here was chosen as the cover girl, I very happy. Didn't Thomas design a fabulous quilt? It is made out of Essex Cotton/Linen blend and had great texture, but nothing like after Lisa finished quilting it. Here is a photo after quilting but before the binding:
I also pieced Answer Key which is a table runner done using the reverse applique technique:
This was before it was quilted. It was also made out of Essex linen/cotton and the reverse applique circles are Kona. The colorful circles are Liberty Lifestyle. You have to read the story behind this one! I think I'll be making it for my table.
And now what you've been waiting for - the giveaway. I will be drawing a name from all comments left on this post telling me if you have sewn with anything other than quilting cotton. Entries are open until Saturday March 29th. The winner will be announced on my blog and I will email the winner. That means if you are a "no-reply blogger" and don't leave an email address in the comment another name will be chosen.

I haven't tried the linen type material but I would sure like to. Just took my first modern quilting class in January at Road To California with Jacquie Gehring.
I;ve worked with linen, silk, polyester(re-cycle clothing for memory quilts), shot cotton is a different texture as well as organic cottons, voile and lace overlay, and t-shirts.
I've sewn with denim from old jeans, but gave it up--too hard on my hands/arms/machine. I used to make clothes of all types of fabrics, but it's been decades since. Thanks for the chance--it looks like a good book!
I haven't yet-I'm a newer quilter-but I would love to try the new linen and cotton blends.
Thanks for the opportunity... In answer to your question, I'm game for anything, I've used all kinds of thrifted/recycled fabrics in quilts, as well as linen. Sometimes I love the results, sometimes I chalk it up as experience points!
I've only worked with cotton, but silk is on my list for a soon-to-make quilt.
Ha! In my early days I didn't know what I was sewing with! But some of the linens today are wonderful to work with! Thanks for the chance to win on of these inspiring books!
I have quilted with Essex linen, regular linen and canvas. All look great and add texture.
No, quilting cotton is about it for me. Well, unless you count kids Halloween costumes then I guess I've used lots of fabrics. But as far as quilting goes, Cotton is all I've used!
You're a cover girl! AWESOME and Congratulations. I love the graphic quality of this quilt. I love sewing with "alternative" fabrics like linen, corduroy, denim, thrifted shirts, vintage quilt tops. I love textures.
I have quilted with polyester and polyester blend fabrics as well as cotton. Thanks!

This looks like a great book, Mary. I'm curious as to why you didn't get to keep the quilts that you made for the book? I've sewn with many types of fabric over the years, especially in my clothing making days!
Denim, flannel, and corduroy... In quilts. For sewing clothing, I've sewn with a lot more variety!
What a fabulous quilt Mary!
I've never used anything other than cotton for quilting!
That cover quilt is gorgeous! I started sewing with socks, then whatever I could find...corduroy, denim, linen, muslin, utility fabrics and fleece. I think that's why I'm lazy and sew with a #90 needle most of the time. While I love the consistency of modern quilt fabric, I like the personality of found fabric projects.
Carrie recently talked about a linen she loves on Instagram so I want to try it. I've quilted wool, cotton, and a horrible tight weave muslin that didnt needle nicely. The gal wo had to bind it struggled with hand stitching it to back as well.
Congrats on being a Cover Girl!
I sewn with just about everything out there, but when it comes to quilting, I haven't ventured far from quilting cottons and cotton/linen blends.
I have sewn with Essex Linen & Kokka linen prints when making bags & pouches but for quilting 8ve only used regular quilting cotton. I'd love to make a quilt with Melody Miller linens that I've been saving/hoarding. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of Thomas' amazing book.
I have used linen as a quilt back and in small projects. I like how it gets very soft when washed! I have sewn with other fabrics in clothes - polyester and other stretchy stuff - and didn't like it at all!
My most recent quilt was made with
samples of home dec twill. All solids made a statement! I also love adding linen, corduroy and wool to my quilts.
I've only made quilts with cottons and flannel. I did back one in fleece once. I've sewn lots of other things though, with lots of other fabrics. Lately I've made lots of infinity scarves with slippery fabrics, and they really make me appreciate sewing with cotton!
I've sewn all my life, everything from clothes to curtains, quilts to wedding dresses and as a result have sewn with all manner of fabrics.
I don't know if homwspun counts as quilting cotton, bot I"be used that and flannel.
I've sewn just about everything because I was a dressmaker before I retired and became a quilter!
I have never made a quilt with anything other than quilting cottons but I have used other fabrics for bags and clothing
congrats on being a cover girl! I've made several quilts from linen and silk.
I've made a couple crazy quilts with various types of fabrics. Remembering how the flocked velvet sewed still makes me shudder.
this looks like a fabulous book both for reading and for quilt inspiration.
I have used many different fabrics in sewing clothes. I don't think I have ever used linen in quilting but inadvertently I've used poly/cotton in quilt making.
I have not made a quilt out of anything other than quilting cotton, but I would love to add some linen to one!
I have never sewn with anything except cotton ... maybe it's time I stepped outside my box!
Neat looking quilts and it sounds like he used some interesting fabrics too.
I haven't made quilts with anything other than quilting cotton, but I've sewn clothes with wools and knits. Thanks for the chance to win.
I've quilted with flannel and unknown donated material - some was shiny so I don't think it was quilty quality. I just bought some material in Mexico and since I can't read Spanish, I'm not sure what it is! Thanks for your contributions! mompatriot at gmail dot com
I have sewn flannel, but much prefer quilting cotton. Thanks for the giveaway!
Lovely quilts Mary~ congrat's on being a 'cover girl'. I've not tried linen, I've done flannel and wool... I think I need to find some linen as I love that look! Thanks for the fun!
HELLO,love your Blog!
Yes,I've sewn some with Minky+some with Denim>prefer quilting cotton though. Thanks for the giveaway chance!
msstitcher1214@gmail.com
I've sewn with knits, tricot, laces, flannels and many others. I even made bridesmaids dress for my daughters wedding many years ago.
I have sewn corduroy for a jumper for my granddaughter. Otherwise, mostly cotton and cotton blends. crystalbluern at onlineok dot com
I've sewn with all kinds of fabric, but my favorite continues to be good old cotton!
The most exotic fabric I have sewn with is Essex Linen for some Zakka-style projects. I have been collecting voile for a quilt back, but I am getting tempted to try a whole quilt from voile - scary!
I sew clothes, stuffed animals with fake fur and home dec items sometimes. thanks for sharing.
I have sewn with linen--clothing only, but have never made a quilt with it. I have used only cotton. Am going to try some--perhaps with my new quilts that are in the drafting stage.
I LOVE Linen! and have sewn it several times. grecomara at gmail dot com
I have used silks in my early Baltimore Album phase. I'm so done with that.
I've sewn with linen and shot cotton and oakshott as non traditional quilting weight fabric. I make clothes sometimes too, and have sewn with knits, voiles, cotton lawn, corduroy and silky fabrics, boy do I prefer quilt weight cotton!
It looks like a lovely book, and you did a great job with the cover quilt! I have made a quilt with denim (real jeans cut up), and there may have been a polyester that disguised itself as a cotton.
I love the linen and working with it, Would love to win the book.
For quilts, no I haven't sewn with anything other than cottons. I also sew clothes, and for those I have used other fabrics.
Sandy A
I have sewn with flannel and denim and silks and satins, if its at a fabric shop its safe to say ive tested it out!!
I've used linen, and lived it. I also made a quilt out of silk neckties. It was awful.
I have sewn with various types of fabrics for clothing but now that I am getting serious about pattern sewing (i.e. clothing, etc.) I am going to re-visit that. Thanks for asking!
I love to sew linen. Also have used corderoy. Not a fan of the corderoy! Ha
Before I was a quilter I sewed clothes for my daughter. She took dance classes and I made her unitards for practice. I also made a couple of baptism dresses for granddaughters, with lace and satin. I have made baby lovies with minky. But mostly it's quilting cotton.
Would love to win , thanks
I did use a sort of gold lame fabric in one quilt. That was the first and last time!
Years ago, I used to be a seamstress and did all kinds of things - kids clothes, crafts (like stiffed animals, and anything with a hot glue gun lol), wedding parties, and alterations. So yes, I have sewn with all kinds of fabrics. I have used upholstery fabric, taffeta, and flannel backed satin (as the backing, satin side out) in a quilt and it turned out amazing! Thank goodness there are no quilt police like there used to be years ago LOL Congrats on your work being chosen as the cover - must be an awesome feeling!
Congratulations Mary on being the cover girl!!!! Very well deserved! I love this quilt and the table runner you made. Thanks also for the giveaway. I recently have made a few projects with linen which I love. I have also thrown in some silk, corduroy and velvet in a coin quilt.
Can't wait to get my hands on this book! I've used Damascus silk (that I bought in a market ("souk") in Jerusalem) in little bits in a quilt, as well as scraps of linen and denim. More as accent pieces that the whole quilt. Maybe one day...
beautiful quilt! Well done on being the cover star! I have sewn with other fabrics, but not quilts. I've used linen in bags and homewares and a bit of home dec weight cotton too. oh, and felt.
I have worked with cotton and linen. Thanks for the great info and a chance to win! Cindy (scgiL2@aol.com)
In terms of quilt making, thus far I've only used regular quilting cotton. I have some Essex linen waiting for me to brave enough to cut into it, and I'm ordering some shot cotton to use as a quilt background.
Thanks for the chance to win the book! I just saw the video of Thomas at Quilt Con, talking about his Martha quilt, and wow. LOVE. I think I have a quilt crush on him.
It was nice to see the real cover quilt. I really like it! I've only used cotton for quilts but have sewn garments with knits and some crafts using mesh netting.
I've used linen and linen blends, corduroy for cushion backs, and stuff like that, but I avoid anything knit or stretchy like the plague if I can! Love that quilt and how wonderful it is on the cover. It is a pattern that calls to me.
Your quilt on the cover is beautiful. I'm a new quilter so I really have only used cotton, but have some gorgeous voile I'd like to use for a back next. Thanks for the opportunity to win.
I have worked with most fabric. I made a suit out of Thai silk and have hand sew blocks from satin and men's ties. They are a challenge but fun.
Love the blocks.
Hi Mary! I've used recycled shirts and 100% cotton and 50% cotton and 50% linen blends that were from a decorator sample book. I'd love to try some silk someday. I also have some 100% linen that I'm considering using for a quilt. Its really heavy and sort of coarse, so I'm still just considering it. :)
I prefer cottons, but back before I "knew better" I made my first quilt with satin polyester crepe! :)
Thanks for the giveaway.
sarah@forrussia.org
So far just quilting cotton but one of these days I plan to give some linens a try.
I have not sewn anything with any other fabric than cotton, and I really need to remedy that. I'm really loving the quilts in this book, and hope to win or buy one.
I don't sew with "quilting cotton" since I prefer the look of the sheen on polyester and prefer sewing with it.
thanks!
I've used Home Dec a lot and it's great - tried upholstery last week - disaster!!!
How exciting that you are a cover girl! It's a magnificent piece. Have sewn all my life - linen, cotton, velvet, viyella, wool, and some crazy synthetics. Linen is a favorite.
jomellenthin@vassar.edu
I've sewn with "other than quilting cotton" to make and alter clothing, but have yet to use anything but quilting cotton in a quilt. I have two quilts planned from the clothes of my recently-deceased grandparents, so i will soon have my chance.
I've made quilts from a lot different materials from different scraps. Lace, silk, poly, old men's ties, baby clothes and of course tshirts. Cotton is the mainstay but a crazy quilt is fun with all the different fabrics
sewmdtx@sbcglobal.net
I have used Essex linen/cotton and just love it. I have also used linen from an old dress. It was pretty fussy to work with.
I have only sewn with quilting cotton...I have been wanting to try voile and do have some furniture canvas fabric waiting for me now. Thanks so much for the chance to win a copy of this amazing book!
- Katelyn @ Sing While Crafting
Yes I've tried lots of things. My most recent favourite was some Anna Marie Horner linen. Thanks for the giveaway.
I've only used quilting cotton, but I'd love to try linen or Liberty lawn. Thanks for the chance to win!
I've been sewing since I was 12, so I've made a few things with fabric other than cotton. I made my Maid of Honor dress for my sister's wedding and I made my friend Molly's wedding dress. I made a bear or two in the past also! Thanks for the give away!
I have used Linen and Silks previously, but tend to use cotton. Love the look of your reverse applique table runner. I definitely need to think of using more Linens, especial for table runners.
SewCalGal
www.sewcalgal.blogspot.com
I have sewn with about every fiber known. I have sewn silk, wool, cottons, synthetics, etc. Have sewn for many years. Lately, I have sewn mostly quilting cottons. Have a new stack of linen I am itching to use.
Yes - I love sewing linen and using felt. Upcycled denim and men's shirts are great to use too. So are towels! I can't wait to see this book - I have an "i" block in it!
I do sew with many different medians. I will not put cheap or poorly made, if you will, fabric into my quilts. I see my quilts as art and they should be made out of the best since I am spending that much time and love on them.
I'm new so I haven't tried anything else but cotton yet. I bought some really pretty pink brocade I've been wanting to use but haven't had the nerve yet. Thanks for the giveaway!
tdkcarpenoctem@hotmail.com
I have sewn with flannel (reusable diaper wipes), terry cloth, and linen in recent years. Eons ago I helped make my formal graduation dress in stretch satin.
In my clothing sewing days, I used many fabrics especially knit. In quilting, I've sewn with flannel and wool. Thanks for the giveaway!
I sew with 100% linen a lot. As long as you stabilize it with starch or Best Press, it is easy to sew and nothing crinkles quite like linen after washing!
Astroturf, duct tape, fun fur or fake fur, vinyls-thick to thin, clear to solid/foam backed, all sorts of polyesters, acetate, rayon, silk, linen, linen/cotton, canvas, quilters canvas, lace, home dec, plastic, paper and leather. I think that may be it. Except I'm pretty sure there was also sewing with fake flowers, feathers and metal as well. Fun question.
I can't think of many things that I haven't sewn on. Ouside of the usual range of fabrics are wood, plastic, paper, leaves, metals. Of course, not all of these were by machine!
I used some linen in a quilt recently and it worked well. I have been contemplating corduroy
I enjoy using felted wool appliqued pieces on a cotton background for quilted wall hangings
I usually use strictly cotton, but I'm interested in seeing the Essex Linen. I would like to work with that to see the results.
I love the cover quilt also. I've sewn with many other fabrics, but quilting cotton is my favorite. My second-most used fabric is silk.
My first quilting experiences years ago seemed to be with anything but 100% cotton. That was back in the early 70's when you were hard pressed to find quality cotton. So in answer to your question I have quilted with denim, corduroy, silk, wool, flannelette, polyester knits and poly/cotton. Now that we have access to such wonderful quilting cottons I tend to use cotton most often but I am experimenting with the new micro fleece, cuddle and corduroy as well. I am looking forward to using the linen fabrics as well.
I've got a piece of grey linen just waiting for me to cut into it. I suspect this book will give me the motivation!
I started quilting in the early 70s - the only cotton available was small floral print calicoes. Not my favorite, so I used anything I liked. Laughing, I didn't know there were rules. Now I crazy quilt a lot...so still using whatever catches my fancy. Thanks for the chance to win. VermontPines at aol dot com
i've only worked with cotton fabrics. i will have to get out of my box and try a small project using linens. love your quilts
