Hope Valley Hexagon Frame Coin Purse

Hope Valley Hexagon Frame Coin Purse

That is a long title, but you know hand pieced hexies take a long time too:

Yes, my photos are upside down!  You guess if it was to get your attention or if that is how Blogger loaded them!

This is the back which is also hand pieced.

It's a great take along project:

These were pieced in the car while my husband was driving.
The coin purse is a secret swap gift for a friend.  Hope she likes it.

Completed block 7 & 8 of
Summer Star by Temecula Quilt Co.
so I am all caught up:

Block 8
These are 4" finished blocks.

Block 7 (should have cropped this photo - oops)

....and all eight:

Not much sewing this weekend.
My sewing room was turned into Audrey's room from Thursday through Sunday.

We had so much fun.
I bought a sewing kit with shoe laces and boards with holes punched in them.  Remember having those as a child? The boards were brightly painted pictures of animals and she loved "working" on them:

Grandpa and Grandma also spent a lot of time helping her sew. We went swimming every day, pontooning, stroller rides, walked to the park to use the playground and reading lots and lots and lots of books.

Audrey brought "Baby" (her doll) along and she was wearing one of Audrey's baby dresses and it was a little large, so I did sneak the sewing machine open to make Baby a new outfit:

Audrey was happy to show it off!
What a wonderful weekend.

Liberty Scrap Challenge 2012

I signed up and was chosen to do a Liberty Scrap Challenge.
Jo from The Organic Stitch Co. sent me some Liberty scraps and my idea was to embellish some onsies!

I made three onsies.  You probably know that the majority of Liberty fabrics are floral, so I further challenged myself to make these onsies for a BOY, namely my grandson who is due to arrive next month.

I used three different methods:

  1. fusible web only
  2. hand pieced hexagons hand appliqued
  3. machine applique with thread writing
++++
Baby Brother

materials:
purchased onsie
Liberty scraps
fusible web - I used Steam-A-Seam 2
pencil
paper
scissors

Create letter template that fits front of onsie:
Draw letters in reverse on paper side of fusible:
Remove second paper according to instructions and place on wrong side of fabric:
Cut out letters (I decided not to cut out very small inside openings on letters) and place on front of onsie.
Press according to directions:
Steam-A-Seam 2 instructs to wash and dry at low heat and not to use dryer sheets.

++++++
Airplane Hexagons
 materials:
purchased onsie
Liberty Scraps
heat proof template plastic cut into hexagon shape (mine is 5/8")
scissors
liquid starch
small paint brush
heat proof mat
iron (small size is much easier for this size hexagon)

Cut out fabric 1/4" larger than your hexagon template:
"Paint" liquid starch in seam allowances only of hexagon:
Press seam allowances over each edge of hexagon on all sides:
Remove template and hexagon is ready to stitch:
Complete as many as you like and stitch together:
I used Aurifil 50 thread and Clover Black Gold Needles.
Applique to front of onsie.

Tiger Growl

materials:
purchased onsie
Liberty scraps (I was lucky enough to find a tiger print)
heat proof template plastic cut into hexagon shape (mine is 1 1/8")
liquid starch
small paint brush
heat proof mat
small iron
fusible interfacing

Cut fabric 1/4" larger than template fussy cutting the tiger:
Paint starch on seam allowance only of fabric:
Press seam allowance over all edges of template as in last instructions.
Press fusible interfacing to fabric back of the front of the onsie:
Use basting glue to apply hexagon to front of onsie:
Place hexagon and then mark where writing will go (I used a Pilot Frixion pen):
Use small zig-zag around hexagon and then free motion foot to write GROWL.
Iron to remove pen marks from onsie.

Finished!
Three fun onsies for a gift or favorite new grandson!
Thanks Jo and Nova!

Quilt for a niece's baby!

I spent quite a lot of time this past week cutting, sewing and trimming blocks for this quilt:
The fabric is:
Monaluna for birch fabrics
Echo by Lotta Jansdotter
It's a Hoot by MoMo for Moda
The pattern is:
Birthday Cake Quilt by Elizabeth Hartman of Oh Fransson
I love that wide stripe for the binding.
Binding completely done by machine using my method in my tutorial.

Lots going on so it should be a great play quilt:
It's 48" by 48" and should be a good size for a baby quilt.
Oh, I love the back too:
Squiggly lines two by two bordered by the birds!  It stayed nice and soft.
One down, one to go!  Another niece is due before the end of the year.

Jacket

I gave up on my machine and went to my sister's to make buttonholes:

The pattern is The New Camp Shirt View B by Cindy Taylor Oates and the fabric is Essex linen/cotton in Medium Aqua from Fresh Squeezed.

My Sewing Smorgasborg Continues...

Audrey's brother will arrive next month and will certainly need some boy pants:

...and back:

Pattern is Anna Maria Horner's Quick Change Trousers from her Handmade Beginnings book.  These are the six month size and I used some of her Little Folks fabric (the orange), some Heather Ross Far Far Away III (the clothes on the line) and some fat quarters of African fabric (I used the wrong side to have the print show).  I'll be making the jacket too.

Block Six of Temecula Quilt Company's Summer Star is complete:

And lastly a couple of needlebooks; one for my daughter and one for the church festival:

Here is the inside:

...yes, still need to quilt Salt Air and get buttonholes in my jacket...no progress on those.

Near Finish

I planned on showing the finish of a jacket I made for myself as all I had left were the buttonholes.
But, I spent half the day trying to get my machine to produce acceptable buttonholes and I guess I need to bring it in to the shop. ugh.

Wanted to let you know that Amy at Amy's Creative Side has featured ME of all people on her blog as part of her A Blogger's Quilt Festival Blogger! .  Check it out HERE if you are interested.  Thanks Amy.

And since I too hate blog posts without a photo, here is a pillowcase for a little princess's fifth birthday that is coming up this week:

Hopefully I'll be back soon with either a quilted Salt Air or a jacket with buttonholes.

Salt Air top finish

I finished my Salt Air top last night!
I wasn't sure about the striped border, but I like it.

It is 62" X 82" and I used the 3 1/2" Drunkards Path die with my Go Baby to cut out the 280 curved piece blocks.
Once again, it's prettier in real life, but I tried photos last night inside and today on the deck and this is the best I can get.
A special "thank you" to a generous someone who knows who she is for this awesome fabric!!!
I can't wait to get it quilted and start using it.  If you have any suggestions for quilting, please share!!

+++++

I had just enough time before Olympic gymnastics last night to finish Summer Star block 5:

I could have had a little more contrast on the star part of this one but I still like it.
